Investigating the effects of benzyladenine and hydrogen peroxide on the physical and chemical properties of cut flowers

Anthurium is a plant belonging to the Asteraceae family with a long flowering period. The effect of hydrogen peroxide on the vase life and post-harvest quality of cut flowers of Manisa lily cultivar was investigated and the results showed that low concentrations of this substance increased the vase life from 9.8 days in control flowers to 12.8 days in treated flowers. The use of benzyladenine also delays senescence in roses, irises, tulips, and prevents yellowing of leaves of clematis and gladiolus. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hydrogen peroxide and benzyladenine on increasing the post-harvest life of Anthurium cultivar Andreanum and to determine the best concentration. Materials and Methods: In order to investigate the effects of different concentrations of benzyladenine (from 1 to 1000 ppm) and hydrogen peroxide (from 5 to 100 macromolar) on the physicochemical properties of Anthurium cut flowers, three separate experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design with 5 replications. Indicators such as vessel life, relative humidity, amount of absorbed solution, dissolved sugar, and ion leakage were examined. Findings: The results of all three experiments showed that a concentration of 100 ppm benzyladenine significantly increased the vase life (from 15 days in control flowers to 19.6 days in flowers treated with 100 ppm benzyladenine) and that the treated flowers had a longer lifespan. Compared to the control. Hydrogen peroxide treatment in the first experiment with a concentration of 25 micromolar had a significant effect on vase life, absorbed solution and relative wet weight, while higher concentrations (50 and 100 micromolar) had no significant effect. In the second experiment, concentrations of 5, 15 and 25 micromolar and in the third experiment all concentrations used had a significant effect on the evaluated traits. Also, the effect of all treatments in the third experiment on the amount of soluble sugar and ion leakage was significant at the 1% probability level. The effect of different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide on vase life in all three experiments was better than the control. Overall conclusion: Considering the positive effects of benzyladenine and hydrogen peroxide on water absorption, the use of these substances prevents water loss in Anthurium cut flowers, and these two factors play a major role in the freshness and flower lifespan. On the other hand, the use of these compounds increases soluble carbohydrates and reduces ion leakage in cut Anthurium flowers. Based on the results obtained, the use of benzyladenine at a concentration of 100 ppm and hydrogen peroxide at optimal levels (5, 10, 15 and 25 micromolar) greatly helps to increase the freshness and longevity of cut anthurium flowers.
